Abstract: Hydraulics model tests were used to carry out a series of study on some hydraulic problems in spillway tunnel with high head and large discharge. It is found that the simulation of environmental pressure in the tunnel has a great influence on the aeration effect, and the increase of environmental pressure can increase the ventilation volume and enhance the aeration effect. Based on the analysis of the hydraulic characteristics of the inclined and elbow part of spillway tunnel which near the outlet, the viewpoint is put forward that changing the Ogee curve is beneficial to alleviate cavitation. The hydraulic characteristics of sidewall aerator in high head and large discharge spillway tunnel are studied by adopting model test method. Based on the analysis of the effect factors on aeration and the causes of sidewall water-wings, two waterwing-preventing sidewall aerator shapes are proposed, which can guarantee good air entrainment and inhibit the formation of water-wings on the side wall as well by controlling the length of the side cavity. It is also showed that the bottom air entrainment can be affected usually by the sidewall aerator, so the bottom and side aerators should be optimized as a whole. Finally, design principles and optimization methods for sidewall aerator body are put forward based on a comprehensive analysis of the hydraulic characteristics of the sidewall aeration.
